HAZARDS THAT LIE IN THE WORKPLACE

by Michael Tulli

Each year, employees miss 10,000 workdays due to work related allergies.  This is costing US companies between $250 million to $6 billion a year.  “A study done by the American Journal of Managed Care discovered that allergies resulted in $1.4 billion in lost productivity for female workers and $2.4 billion for male workers.” (Health Alliance.com)

Occupational Allergies have become a growing concern for companies, considering anyone can develop allergies to substances in the workplace.  It is not only people with allergies that are subceptable to occupational substances.  People that do not usually suffer from any type of allergies are now experiencing symptoms in the work place.  In fact, many of these people are developing occupational asthma due to their work environment.

Some biological agents that can cause allergic responses include the following: dust, bacteria, fungi, pollen, and even urine.  These agents can become airborne and re-circulate through the ventilation system and settle on your blinds.  Even fax machines, copiers, paper, felt-tip markers, printers and correction fluid have been found to release volatile organic compounds, which can cause allergic reactions.

Effects of Occupational Allergies

Occupational allergens may cause the following: respiratory disorders, skin disorders, or anaphylactic shock.

Studies have shown that long-term exposure to such agents will cause significant damage to the respiratory tract.  Work-related asthma can range from: shortness of breath, tightness in the chest, and/or wheezing.

These types of agents can also cause allergic dermatitis and hives.  Symptoms usually appear one to two days after exposure.

What can employers do?

Employers can have their ventilation system checked and cleaned on a regular basis.  When hiring a janitorial service, employers should research and look for companies that offer ultrasonic cleaning for blinds and other industrial items.  This way you know that it’s not only clean, but it is sanitized!

HAVE YOU LOOKED AT YOUR BLINDS LATELY?

by Michael Tulli

People do not realize how much dust and debris lies on your blinds.  When cleaning, many people neglect to look at their blinds or shades, not thinking what type of agents they carry and the effects they have on their own health. Many sicknesses and allergies occur in the home are caused by biological agents (i.e. dust, bacteria, fungi, pollen, and even urine) that become airborne and re-circulate through the ventilation system and settle on you furniture and especially your blinds!  Many people think that using a dust rag and/or a vacuum will solve their problems, however, when your troubles lie on something you don’t even think about cleaning, then you are not getting to the root of the problem.  Next time your cleaning, take a look at your blinds or shades.  Now, run your fingers across them…notice something?  That build up, is what you breathe in everyday and you don’t even realize it!  Studies have shown that long-term exposure to such agents will cause significant damage to the respiratory tract.  Symptoms include: shortness of breath, tightness in the chest, and/or wheezing.  These types of agents can also cause allergic dermatitis and hives.  Symptoms usually appear one to two days after exposure. So, what is the solution?  Have your blinds or shades professionally cleaned at least once a year.  Ultrasonic cleaning will sanitize and deodorize, but most importantly, it will demagnetize your blinds or shades.  That means dust and other biological agents will take longer to build up, resulting in less cleaning time and more time to breathe easier.
